Add years
Most gTLDs let you add up to 10 years at today's price before the effective date. On a +$0.71 increase like .com, that is about $7 saved per name over 10 years. A +$11 step like .mobi is about $110.
Transfer instead
A transfer fee usually includes one extra year and can be cheaper than a renewal. Mind the 60-day ICANN lock after a new register or a previous transfer.
